I’ve always wanted the feeling of a luxurious bed at home, the kind of bed you can find in a 5 star hotel. They are a dream to look at when you arrive and you don’t want to leave the bed in the mornings. For my next home, I have a goal to create a bed like this. If you also would like a hotel bed at home, here is my recommendations and tips to achieve it.

1. Start with quality.
When it comes to bedding, you get what you pay for. This goes for duvet, pillow covers, bedding, mattress and even the bed itself. When it comes to duvet, try to go for feather/down, wool or silk. If you would rather consider synthetic are microfibre and hallowfibre good alternatives. When it comes to quality pillowcase would I go for Egyptian cotton, sateen cotton or silk. Silk has over the last years become very popular since it’s gentle on skin. The same goes for bedding and sheet – but I would be careful of using silk on all the items since it’s less breathable.
2. Size of the bed and bedding
Another key factor for making a bed at home feel like a hotel bed is the size. Hotel beds are normally King Size and have a double duvet. A double duvet in not that normal in Scandinavia, but quite normal in the UK. It’s possible to make a bed look like a hotel bed without double duvet, but it will not look as “clean” in the look. A possibles way is to have two single beds and two duvets/bedspread and let there be a clear line in the bedding between the beds.

3. Do the basics
Start with putting on the bedcover and the bedding. Make sure that the bedcover is tucked under the bed. To make the bedding look really neat, try to fold it around the bed with the hospital corner technic. Have you never heard about hospital corners and need some advise? Check out this video

4. Layer with a bedspread
A important factor to make the bed look warm and welcoming, is layers and different texture. Add a bedspread over you duvet, regardless of the time of the year. Try to find a bedspread that works well with the surroundings and of good quality. It’s up to you if you want to do the hotel corners on the bedspread at the bottom of the bed, but let the bedspread be pulled down a quarter together with the duvet at the top to show layers and make place for the pillows.
Tip: if you want the bedspread to look extra lofty, try to add an extra cover or buy a cover that is larger. An example is to buy a king size bedspread for a queen size bed.
5. Adding pillows
At the top of your bed, add two sleeping pillows to each person and make sure to fluff them up so they seem bigger. Then add some fluffed styling pillows in front of the sleeping pillows. Make sure that it matches with the bedspread and the room, but it does not need to be the exact same colour. It can also be very nice to bring in other textures to the bed with these pillows, like wool or linen – if that has not been used. When it comes to how many styling pillows, three is a magical styling number or an odd number, like 5 and 7. Also try out if different shapes can work well for your bed.

6. Some finishing touches
To finish it off with some personal touches, add a folded throw on the end of the bed, some slippers at the side side of the bed or a monogrammed pillow. You can also add a tray on the table. Make also sure that your bedside tables are cleaned up and styled as well and that there is good lighting for some bedtime reading.
