Sometimes a staircase can be forgotten when you decorate a home, since it’s not a room in itself. However, a well decorated staircase can do wonders to the space around and make a home feel warm and welcoming. Since it’s normally not a lot of space, when it comes to decorating a staircase it can be difficult to understand how to actually decorate, since it differs so much from other rooms.
Here are my recommendations of how you can decorate a staircase in your home.
Add a runner
A great way to decorate a hallway is to add a runner. This can easily make a staircase feel more polished and put together. Since there is not a lot of room to decorate a staircase, adding a bold runner can work really well. You could consider adding a classic red runner, or a runner with a pattern.
The best type of runners are the ones that are tailored to the staircase. There is no specific metric when it comes to how wide a runner should be, it is more dependent on your taste. But normally a runner tends to cover 2/3 of the steps.
You can also make your own staircase runner if you cannot budget for a tailor-made one. To do this, sew different pieces together – this bring more of your personality into the design. Remember that a staircase is a high traffic area, which means that the runner needs to be able to handle a lot of use.
Two tone paint
A staircase is a brilliant area where you can add different colours since there are so many different surfaces and angles. You can use different colours on different angles to make the staircase stand out. This can be in high contrast colours like black and white, but you can also use a lower contrast like white and beige or other natural colours. The most important consideration is to ensure that the colours you pick work well with the rest of the surroundings and that colours in the staircase are replicated in the spaces they are leading from/to.
Decorating walls
A great way to spruce up the staircase is of-course to tackle the walls. If you have some extra room space and some money to spend, built in bookshelves or even a seating area can really make a staircase look magnificent. Pictures and paintings can also work wonders. Try to position them at the same angle as the staircase – a staircase is a great area to hang multiple pictures as their shape can also compliment the angular edges of the staircase.
Lighting
There are many lighting options you have when it comes to a staircase. If you have a very grand staircase with a high celling above, I recommend trying a chandelier. If you do not have a high ceiling, try to go for options like built in spotlights, or accent lighting on the wall. For frame lighting, try using fairy lights. This can be achieved by adding fairy lights on the handrails or in a jar next to the steps. Make sure that the type of lighting works with your interior design in the home. Be careful with going too modern in the floor lighting if you have more of a traditional home.
Statement corner
Many staircases have a corner where the staircase turns and the step becomes a bit larger. This area is a perfect place to add an item to add some character to the space . This could be a plant, a vase with flowers, a standing lamp or even sculpture.
