In many cases when you want to decorate your home, you need to take into consideration the actual structure of the house and the room. For many people that are living in newer houses, they do not have the same ceiling height that they perhaps had in the buildings that where built 100 years ago. So how do you decorate your home when the ceiling is perhaps no more than 240 cm?
Here follows my tips over what you can decor if you have a low ceiling
From The Interior Editor
1. Make the ceiling something more than a ceiling
A great way to actually cope with a low ceiling, is to make a feature of it. You can for example paint it in a bright or bold colour, paint something decorative or cover it with wallpaper. This can make the ceiling the centrepiece of the room and will not put the grandness of a room down even though the ceiling is low.
2. Bring the attention to other elements
If you don’t have a high ceiling, you can try to bring the attention to another part of the room. It can be a pattern wallpaper or a rug or something else. Try then to make the ceiling blend with the element that is in focus. It can for example be paining the ceiling in a natural colour and in the same colour scheme as the focus element.

3. Lengthen with vertical lines
A great way to make a room look taller than what it actually is, is with long vertical lines. This can for example be done with installing ceiling height doors or it can be done with adding long curtains that you install at the top of the wall. The curtains do not need to hang straight over the window, they can be hang way above the window. This will make the room appeal taller than what it actually is.
You can also bring in wallpaper that has vertical lines to give the same illusion. Try to go for colours where the ceiling has a lighter colour than the walls. This can make the ceiling seem more airy.
4. Bring in low furniture
By increasing the area between the ceiling and the furniture, can you add a sense of height to a room. It will make the room seem more specious than what it actually is. It can for example be a low sofa and a low coffee table. If you are are decorating an attic into a bedroom will a bed with out legs work well to make the space feel more like a proper room. It’s all about making the empty space between furniture and ceiling as large as possible.

5. Add a ceiling window
If you have the opportunity to add a ceiling window, can this bring wonders to a low ceiling room. The space from outside the room will then be taken into the judgment of how a room appears. You can also bring in this illution with tall glass doors. This has been very popular over the recent years to add to homes to make them seem larger.
6. Lighting
When it comes to the right lighting for a room with low ceiling, try to go for wall light. Wall lighting will draw attention to the walls and not to the ceiling. If you need to have a light hanging from the ceiling, make sure that the hanging is shortened. Another effective way is to use light that is facing upwards or lights that create lines vertically. This will give the same illusion as other vertical lines.
