The living room is probably my favorite room in a house. It’s where you can really be creative with your space. You will probably spend a lot of time in the living room, so making a bit of effort to make it look nice will be to your benefit.
Here follows some recommendations to how to approach decorating a living room.
1. Start with a plan
The first step is to start with a plan. Understand the space you have and what’s actually possible. Where are the doors in the room and what do people need access to easier in a typical day. Check also out where the windows are in the room and where the natural light will be hitting the room. You also need to understand how you want to use the room. Is it for TV watching, laying flat out on the sofa or entertaining people? How many people do you need to seat? Are there any specific activities that is going to happen? After this, try to lay out the draft on a paper and try to understand what’s possible or not possible.
2. Focus on the main furniture
Continue to focus on the main furniture you want in the room – normally a sofa. Dare to invest a bit more in the main furniture and go for something you really like. If you need an investment to last for a long time, go for a neutral colour sofa that can be mixed easily with a lot of different colours. Also, remember to go for a colour that fits to your life situation. If you have kids, perhaps you should stay away from a mohair sofa. Remember also that you are actually going to sit in the sofa, so make sure that it’s comfortable for you to sit in.
3. Continue with lighting
When designing the perfect living room, lighting is important. After the key furniture, continue therefore with the lighting. Invest in beautiful lamps that really shows off your personality. Make sure that you have enough lamps in the room. with a pendant lighting and supporting lighting in corners and key use areas. Remember also to be aware over what kind of lighting the lamp is also giving off. If you want to add vintage to the mix, is a vintage lamp easy to mix with old and new.
4. Rug plan
Rugs are perfect ways to separate different areas of the room. Remember to look at the furniture before you pick the rug, the rug should be larger than the use space or the seating space. Make sure that you are aware over the colour and the texture and how it works with the rest of the room.
5. Add tables
A coffee table can easily become a focal point in the room and it can be an easy way to create contrast to the other items in the room. Mix it up with accent tables and functional necessities, like a coffee cup.
6. Layer it with different textures
To make dept to the room, try to add different textures and different materials. It can be metal, wood, wool, silk, glass etc. Remember how they make you feel – it’s it a hard surface or a soft surface? An easy way to add texture is with a blanket or decorative items like frames. The easiest way to add, is with different pillows. Dare to pick texture with colours that works well with each other. These can easily be replaced if you are bored of them.
7. Add personality
An to the end, add your personality to it. Fill the frames with pictures that matters for you and fill the room with trinkets and items that you have collected over the years. Coffee table books is also a good way of showing personality.
And that’s it.
What did you think you will add to your living room?
