Scandinavian Rugs are well known to be easy to add to a living room. Its neutral colors, minimalist design and natural fabrics makes it an easy item to add regardless of the style. Scandinavian homes are known for being designed to be practical and simple in their design. The most common rug colors to be found in Scandinavian homes are typically white, beige, brown and grey. But it is also possible to find designs that lean more towards darker tones. The reason why Scandinavian rugs tends to be in a lighter shade is to draw as much light as possible into the home as Scandinavia can have long and dark winters. But you do not have to live in place with long winters to see the benefit of a Scandinavian rug. Scandinavian rugs work with any home that wants to create a cozy atmosphere.
Affordable Scandinavian Rugs
In this post, I will share some of my favourite Scandinavian rugs that would work with almost every living room and bedroom style. The key to find your perfect Scandinavian Rug is to make sure that the colors and/or texture is reflected on other items in the room. This will make the room look more cohesive.
Perhaps one of my favourite rug and one that will definitely will create ‘hygge’, is the sheepskin rug – It makes a home so cosy. A sheepskin can be used as a rug on the floor but it can also lay over a sofa, a bench or a stool. If you want to go really North Scandinavian, you can even add a reindeer skin to the look.
Scandinavian Rugs tend to have minimal pattern and solid colors. If the rug has pattern, will it normally be in geometrical lines and shapes. The key is for the rug to create a warm and calm atmosphere without drawing too much attention. Since the design tends to be simple, you can easily find a Scandinavian rug on a budget.
To help you in finding your perfect Scandinavian rug, here are my favorite 12 Scandinavian rugs.
1. The Shaggy Scandinavian Rug
IKEA is a great place to look for a Scandinavian rugs for your home. They have a broad range of styles and the price tends to be reasonable. One of my favorite rugs from IKEA right now is this white shaggy rug. Shaggy rugs definitely have come back into trend over the last few years. They are not the easiest to clean and perhaps not ideal if you have animals. But it’s the perfect rug if you want a cosy atmosphere. It’s great in the living room, but it would also be brilliant to add to a bedroom.
2. The Scandinavian staple: Sheepskin
One of the key staples in a Scandinavian home is the sheepskin. It can be used as a rug on the floor but is normally used to lay over a sofa or a chair. It is especially used a lot in peoples mountain cabins in Scandinavia and is the ideal item to make any home warm and cozy. It keeps you really warm as well if you sit or stand on it. Nothing feels better than letting your toes sink into a sheepskin rug.
3. The Short Hair Shaggy Rug
If you would love to add a shaggy rug to your home, but afraid if you can keep it clean. Then another great option is the short hair shaggy rug look. It gives a lot of coziness but at the same time; easier to vacuum and keeping clean. This rug has become very normal to see in Scandinavian homes over the last years and perfect with a lounge sofa or TV corner.
4. The Scandinavian Jute Rug
If you however really need a durable rug, then a Jute rug is a great option. It is made of the natural fabric jute and blends therefore easily into a Scandinavian home. It’s a practical rug since the rug is flat-woven and it would work really well under a dining room table or in a hallway.
5. The Scandinavian Pattern Rug
If you want a pattern rug that works with the Scandinavian style, then look for rugs that have a clean geometrical pattern. This gray handwoven rug from IKEA is a good example. The decorative tassels make it look softer. Adding tassels as a decorative item to other places in the room will make this style really blend in with your home.
6. The Scandinavian Seagrass Rug
Another example of a very durable rug is the seagrass rug. In the same way as a jute rug, a seagrass rug with its natural fabric, will blend well into a Scandinavian styled home. This example from Wayfair is a perfect area rug since it has a black boarder. Try to add on your furniture inside of the black square to make a space into a dedicated area. The look will really elevate a home.
7. Braided Scandinavian Rug
Another option to a patterned rug that can blend well in with any style is a braided rug. This a great way to add some movement and texture to a rug without adding extra color. I really like this taupe rug from Wayfair which works to have both indoor and outdoor.
8. A Playful Scandinavian Rug
Are you looking for a playful Scandinavian rug? Then check out this polka dot rug from IKEA. This rug would be ideal to add to a kids room. It’s fun and durable. You could also add the rug to a living room to add a bit more character to a room. Who dosen’t want to add some polkadots to their home?
9. The Area Divider Rug
If you need to divide a room into different sections (because of the size of the room), can this geometric rug be a good rug to use. The white square makes it perfect to create a section and have under a dining room table.
10. Subtle Geometrical Rug
I love when there is a lot of pattern on a rug, but it perhaps is not that visible straight away. This rug from Wayfair is a great example of this. A pattern like this can add a lot of debt to a room without it being overwhelming.
11. The Brown Sheepskin Rug
If you are not a big fan of white sheepskin, then you can also find sheepskin in many different colors. My favorite color of skeepskin after white is this brown example from IKEA. It works well over old chairs and benches.
12. The Black Geometrical Rug
If you would like the geometrical pattern to be more visible and take more of the attention, then adding a black geometrical rug is a really good option. This rug will work well with furniture with black details, for example dining stools with black legs.
