Good morning. I’m finally back on the blog after a well needed break and in todays post we’re going to talk about sofas. We are in process of buying new sofas for our formal living room, a process that has taken more than 3 months. The sofas are arriving on Thursday this week and I cannot wait to finally have them in house. But before I tell you what kind of sofas we ended up with, I want to highlight how we approached the task of picking the right sofa.
Here are the step-by-step tips we used to finding a sofa for our home.
1. Use of the sofa
The first area we need to cover is the use of the sofas. What are the sofas going to be used for and how many will we need to sit in the area? In our house, we can host 8 people and therefore we want to be able to seat 8 people in the formal living room area. We also want it to be a space where conversations are created and the TV is not the centrepiece.
2. Understanding the space
The second question we needed to answer was where exactly the sofas would be positioned. It is key to understand the flow of the room and the available space. The flow of a room is determined by how people need to move in and through the room. For example, where are the doors and are there spaces where people will want access on a regular basis, like a sofa corner with TV? The key to this assessment is to have enough space in the room so you do not feel too cramped or are left with too much empty space.
3. Measure it up
After understanding the flow of the room, it is time to start measuring it up. Find a few sofas on internet that you like and that could work for your space. Then start measuring the space you want the sofas to be in. Use masking tape on the floor to mark out their position. This will give you an indication of the space with the different potential sofas specifications as they will all differ in length, depth and height respectively. It will also give you an indication of how easy it will be to move around in the space with them.
4. Adapt to your life situation
Sometimes, your life situation will impact of what kind of furniture you will want to go for. If you have animals or kids, then perhaps you should go for a sofa with a darker colour or a sofa with covers that can be washed. Equally your decision will likely be influenced by your budget or how long you intend to stay in the home. Pick a sofa that adapts well to your situation, so you don’t get worried or disappointed through the realities of your life.
5. Style and colour
The last thing to remember is to understand what kind of style and color to go with. The key here is to understand what’s already in the room. If there is already a lot happening in the room, try to pick a style that is more minimalistic. Also, try to pick colors that compliment with the existing color scheme. If you want to understand more about colours, then check one of my older blog post out here.
Are you curious to know which sofas we ended up with? Then stay tuned. It’s a minimalistic style for a busy room and one that definitely won’t break the bank.
