Over the last few weeks I’ve been viewing online properties in Norway. There are so many properties to view, but most of them are modern which is an issue since I prefer the more traditional style. So how can you make a modern home more traditional?

1. Reflect the shapes
A great way to connect old with new is to connect the two of them with the same type of shapes. If your windows are square, try to incorporate something that also has the same square. This could for example, be a coffee table or a tray. Doing this will make the room appear more put together and
2. Antique rugs
A great way to add some history into a modern home, is to add an oriental or antique rug. The benefit is that it will not create conflict with the corners or shapes of a modern home since it’s placed on the floor. A rug can also easily be combined with any kind of furniture.

3. Connect with colours
If you are living in a modern home but want more of a traditional look, try to work with colours that are both traditional and modern. One colour that always works for both traditional and modern, is white. Other colours may change with the trends. Other colours which are now quite popular/modern and at the same time traditional are toned down pink and peach.
4. Modern furniture with classic looks
Modern furniture can also have a traditional look. This is a great way of connecting traditional style in a modern home. Try to go for more structured sofas and furniture that is made from wood or other materials that are more natural or have been in use for many decades. Use for example, brass over steel if that works wit your buildings colours.

5. Vintage lamps
Perhaps one of the easiest items to add in a modern home is traditional or antique lamps. Flats in cities can have chandeliers, but the rest of the home can be modern. If you do not have high ceilings, a reading lamp or a accent lamp that is vintage can easily be incorporated into a modern home. Try to connect the colours in the lamps with what’s going on in the rest of the room.
6. Decorate
Accessorise your modern home with a few traditional items, this can be a great way to connect the modern and the traditional worlds together. This can be a vase, blanket or a candle. Try to select items that best reflect your personality to get best results and satisfaction. Make sure that the items also blend with the other colours reflected.
