To my surprise, I was able to write 25 posts for December. Based on the feedback from the 25 first post on the blog, was the post about combining colours the one that received the best feedback. So here comes a follow up on how to actually work with one specific colour combination; complimentary colours also known as contrast colours.
Light Green and PinkFrom Katie Considers
Compimentary colours are the colour combination where two colours on the opposite side of the colour wheel is used together. This is a colour combination that sometimes can be look upon as a blog statement in a home, since both colours draws attention.
You do not need to add only the two colours to a room if you choose to go with a complimentary colour strategy, but the two colours should play the main part in the room. You can also let one of the colour be more represented in the room than the other colour. But do remember that you need to spread the colours evenly in a room so the eye experience some balance to the colour combination.
Complimentary colour combination
Here follows some examples I enjoy of complimentary colour combinations.
Pink and Light Green
From Ideal Home
Pink and light green is probably my favourite colour combination of complimentary colours. The light green reminds me of summer and pink has a softness to it. Is a perfect colour combination for a girls room or a drawing room.

Teal and dark orange
From Martha Stewart
Teal and drak orange is a very strong colour combination, perhaps the strongest. This colour combination is perhaps used in the best way in smaller portions with adding a natural colour to the mix. Both picture examples have a natural wall colour.

Yellow and Purple
From Pinterest
Purple and Yellow is a colour combination that brings associations to spring and sun. This combination can be good to try in a living room or in a spare bedroom that has a lot of access to sunlight. This will make the colours blend easier with the look of the room.

Blue and Light Orange
From Serena & Lily
When it comes to blue and light orange – is this a combination that can work well in most rooms. Especially living room and bedroom. The orange can even be lighter than what it is in the pictures. The darker the blue, the lighter the orange.

Red and Green
From La Dolce Vita
Green and red is probably the most common complimentary colour. It’s a combination that is heavily used with Christmas and can be well used in living rooms, kitchens and dining rooms. Make sure that the colour strength is the same in both colours and be careful of choosing a light green with a bright red since the colour strength then will be unbalanced.

If you are new with complimentary colour combinations would I recumbent to start in a room with neutral colours and add smaller items of the complimentary colours to see how you like it.
Have you ever tried decorating with complimentary colours?
